Career Advising Policy Implementation

Career Advising Project

The Program Cabinet (made up of Ohio ESC and Department of Education & Workforce staff) has allotted funds for a Career Advising project.

Need for the Project

Every school district is required by law to have Career Advising policies. Generally, districts have adopted NEOLA or OSBA policies to comply with state law, but implementation and monitoring of those policies has lacked coherence as districts have applied the policies with varying degrees of fidelity.

Project Goal

The purpose of this proposal is to build capacity of ESCs, to improve coherence, dissemination, implementation and monitoring of Career Advising Policy across Ohio.

Deliverables are to identify, prioritize and share strategies through a statewide community of practice that foster success and mitigate challenges in implementing and monitoring career advising activities and outcomes critical to long-term sustainability of this work.

Project funds are not intended for creation of new CTE content.

Project Scope

We are seeking members from Ohio's ESC network to participate in a Community of Practice that will:

1. Facilitate a process to review, synthesize and discuss Career Advising policies, resources, and strategies

2. Define common criteria for effective Career Advising

3. Disseminate tools and resources for career advising implementation in the Ohio Professional Learning Directory

4. Explore Key Performance Indicators and tools to measure impact of Career Advising activities

Desired Project Outcomes

  • Coherence - shared understanding of effective career advising implementation strategies
  • Sustainability - career advising resources housed in Ohio Learning Community
  • Capacity - community of practice for ESC staff responsible for implementing and supporting career advising in member districts
